We caught up with Malcolm Cowell, the head of women’s football, ahead of this Sunday’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup 3rd Round Qualifying tie against Boldmere St. Michaels.
An unbeaten start to the season, what are your thoughts on the opening games?
“The season has started well with two wins in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup and two wins in the league. The first cup game was really hard work against a well drilled Corsham side, we played well with it being the very first game of the season.
“And if I’m honest, although we are unbeaten to date, we haven’t been firing on all cylinders. However, we remain unbeaten and we all know there is a lot more to come from everyone.”
You’re facing tough opposition in the next round of the cup. What do you know about Boldmere St. Michaels?
“Boldmere are a tier 4 side and well drilled under the management of ex Wolves midfielder Karl Henry.
“We watched on Sunday against Worcester City and they play with confidence and have some experienced players, especially Jade Formaston, the captain, who has played higher up.
“We know we are in for a tough game but if we go into it in the right frame of mind I’m sure we can give a very good account of ourselves and who knows, in the FA Cup anything can happen.”
It’s the Women’s first time in the FA Cup and it’s been a great run so far. But what would it mean to the staff and players to beat a side like Boldmere St. Michaels?
“It would mean everything to both staff and players to beat a team like Boldmere. It would make a few people sit up and realise what we are forming here at Hereford FC Women.
“But having said that we are just proud to be at this stage of the cup in our first ever time entering.”
How have your preparations been leading up to Sunday’s FA Cup tie?
“Preparations have been as good as we could make them. It didn’t help not having a game on Sunday as it breaks that momentum.
“But we managed to train and virtually had a full squad. And we had another training session on Monday night which went well.
“We have covered as much as we can but we don’t want to overcomplicate things. All the ladies are now raring to go and want to give a good account of themselves.
Are there any injury concerns ahead of Sunday?
“At this moment in time, we have no injury worries, it did help to have a week off from competitive games.
“We have a couple unavailable due to holidays and work commitments which we have no control over; but we also hopefully have a couple of new signings to bolster the squad!”
